When 16-year-old Quinn Carroll was receiving treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma at Children's Wisconsin, his favorite comfort food was waffles and strawberries topped with a mountain of whipped cream. They put a smile on his face and provided him with the nourishment he needed.
The phrase "waffles and strawberries" reminded Quinn's Dad of a phrase - "seashells and balloons" - that the late Marquette University basketball coach, Al McGuire, used to describe when when life was good.
The Carroll family decided to use "waffles and strawberries" as their phrase to represent when Quinn was feeling good.
As Quinn's Dad explained, "Someday, when Quinn beats cancer, a friend or family member will ask us how things are going and we'll respond, 'Everything is waffles and strawberries.' I look forward to that day!"
Naturally, when Quinn decided to create a foundation to help teens with cancer, the name choice was obvious - The Waffles & Strawberries Foundation, Inc.
