While being treated for Hodgkin's Lymphoma, 16-year-old Quinn Carroll experienced strong feelings of gratitude for the family and friends who helped him face and deal with the challenges of cancer.
He also felt a strong sense of guilt.
There were so many people doing nice things for him. It was amazing. But, coupled with his illness, it was also a bit overwhelming.
A simple thought that was not so simple to complete
While in the hospital, Quinn desperately wanted to thank those who were caring for him by giving them a small token of his appreciation. A gift. But, how could he while he was being treated for lymphoma? Because of cancer, he had very little control over his life.
Inspiration born out of adversity
The conflicted feelings of gratitude and guilt inspired Quinn to come up with a way to help teens like him who might struggle with the same issue he struggled with. He wanted to create a way to help teens with cancer give a gift to those who help them most. So, Quinn decided to create The Waffles & Strawberries Foundation, Inc. (Why waffles and strawberries?)
A Positive Distraction During A Challenging Time
The simple act of purchasing a gift for a loved one can have a significant, positive impact on a teenager with cancer. It gives them control when they’ve lost control. It gives them the ability to make decisions when most decisions are being made for them. And, it’s a positive distraction at a time when distractions are needed.
